There are some sessions that leave you smiling all the way home. And then there are sessions that stay with you. This beautiful evening in Albion, Michigan was both. Nestled on a privately owned property surrounded by tall grass, summer skies, and the kind of peaceful quiet you can't recreate anywhere else, I had the privilege of photographing a family whose story is one of heartbreak, healing, second chances, and unconditional love.
At first glance, you see a beautiful family of four. But when you look a little closer, you realize they're actually a family of five. Carter is still very much part of this family. One of my favorite moments from the evening was watching the girls proudly hold Carter's portrait. It wasn't posed because someone told them to smileāit was filled with love. It was a reminder that while someone may no longer walk beside us, they never stop being part of our story. As a photographer, those are the moments I hope to preserve. The ones that matter years from now.
What makes this family's story even more incredible is how life has a way of writing chapters none of us could ever imagine. After experiencing the unimaginable loss of her son, Carter, this incredible mom eventually found love again. She married a man whose last name just so happens to be... Carter. Sometimes life whispers little reminders that the people we love never really leave us.
Recently, he officially adopted her two daughters, making them all Carters. Not because of biology. Not because of obligation. But because love chose them. Watching them together, it was impossible not to notice the easy smiles, the laughter between poses, and the comfort they have with one another.
The girls adore their parents, and it's obvious this family has built something incredibly strong together. That's what I love most about photographing blended families. Families don't all start the same way. Some are built through birth. Some through marriage. Some through adoption. But every single one is held together by love. And this family is proof of that.
The sunset gave us the most beautiful backdrop, but honestly, it couldn't compete with what was happening in front of my camera. Every hug, every glance, every laugh told a story of resilience. A story that says grief and joy can exist in the very same photograph. A story that reminds us memories don't fade just because life keeps moving forward.
Carter's name lives on in more ways than one. His memory is carried in the hearts of his mom, his sisters, and now in a family name that beautifully ties their past and present together. I don't believe that was an accident.
To the Carter family... Thank you for trusting Flying Arrow Studios with such a meaningful chapter of your story.
Thank you for allowing me to witness your love, your strength, and the beautiful way you've honored Carter while continuing to embrace new beginnings. It was truly an honor.
